This is starting my second year of asparagus planted by root and crown. I'm at 7000 elevation and the aparagus were starting to come back. A couple of stalks here and there; then last night it froze and most of the small growing stalks withered. Will they come back or does it kill the crown. Also how deep under the ground should the crown be. When I planted the crowns last year I lost some due to not being under the ground enough. rj

I tend to pile some new dirt and compost over the row of asparagus in my garden every six months or so. I read somewhere that it likes to be covered with the rich organic matter. If you mulch it with some compost that should help. Mine has been frozen in the winter and keeps coming back, but I'm in North Texas, lower elevation and fewer freeze days.

Here in N.Texas you put the crowns about 10" down and cover with compost a few inches and then more as they grow. You can check with your local extension office for information about the specifics in your area.
