Ok so I thought I had planted all peas on this row but I have several of this "unidentified" vegetable showing up. On the very left you can see part of a pea plant but what is this in the very middle of the photo???

That is basil. Pick it before the first frost and dry it, or use it fresh. It looks delicious.

Thanks - I wasn't even thinking Basil because I only had planted peas. I now realize that when I planted the peas I used compost to top dress the seedings and the compost must have contained some Basil leaves and seeds from several months ago and boy did they sprout....

I have three compost piles in my back yard. The one I'm adding to in the current year, the one that was piled up last year that is just sitting there, and the one from two years ago that is all broken down to a soil/humate material, and that's the one I use. I get less of the volunteer activity that way.
