I would do it in the fall and let it rot over winter. I till in about 6 inches of compost, not finished, in the fall and let it finish decaying over winter. By spring, when it is time to plant I can't find anything that resembles the unfinished compost and the garden does great. This year I was able to get about 6 dozen cucs from just two plants. I also got alot of tomatoes. to many for me and the wife to eat so we gave away, to the neighbors, the extras.

I not sure that you should digging so deep, if I have to dig, I don't go more than 6". Spoke with Howard few months back and he recommends no till.

Never dig in the garden. There is no reason to do so. In fact, there several reason not to do so. Leave everything on top of the soil. Ken H
