Hello everyone! I have been a Ground Crew member since 2003 and have been posting questions and answers since then. I am excited to say that I have been asked to be the moderator of this forum, to which I immediately accepted. I am a native Texan, live in the Lake Highlands area of Dallas and I have been growing herbs and some vegetables for about 7 years now. My husband and I have been 100% organic for over 15 years, inside and outside the house.

I look forward to learning more from all of you and will continue to provide you all with any information I have.

Have a wonderful day!

Sandi

Hmmm....how about having someone come over and weed the garden?

Sandi,
Hi! This is my first year gardening. I've read a number of your posts, excellent advice, very helpful. I'm in Georgetown, TX and some of my tomatoes have Blossom End Rot -- gray to black spot on the bottom of the tomatoes. I've tried adjusting watering to 10 mins 3x per day plus dampening the dirt around 10 AM. I've added calcium and Tomato-Tone. Things WERE looking a little better, but wth all the rain we've had this week, it's rearing its ugly head again on the new tomatoes my plants have just set in these wonderful lower temperatures. Can you possibly help me with what to try next?

STOP water every day! Water deeply, every 2-3 days. Blossom end rot is a calcium deficiency and can be helped by adding soft rock phosphates to the soil. Also, when you water, make sure the leaves are not getting wet. Water at the base only, and fertilize every 2-3 weeks.

OK. Regarding fertilizing. I've been using mostly compost tea, applied at the roots about once every week or two. I've only used one application of fertilizer, the TomatoTone. Should I continue using the compost tea, change to something else, use it less frequently? As I said, I'm a complete novice. Thanks for your help!!!!

You can continue with compost tea. I would supplement with a balanced, organic fertilizer every 2-3 weeks while they are producing. You can also spray the leaves, early in the morning, with seaweed...as often as you want. That will help deter spider mites and keep the plant healthy.
