 Post subject: weevils in Corn Meal

couple of years ago I bought a 20# bag of organic Horticultural corn meal with in a week or so of haveing opened bag I Had weevils

Two weeks I bought another 20# & put it in freezer for a coupel of weeks . & Now have put it in a sealed Can I expect that when I open bucket that there will be no weevils or will I Need to take further stepsto keep weevils out & if so how should I proceed

The weevil eggs are in the meal, and freezing as you have done is an excellent way to kill them. I put any flour or grain product into the freezer for a while - I got tired last year of them popping up in the cupboards and pantry with that extremely hot weather.

If you keep it around long enough it is bound to attract pests again, so using it when you buy it is a good idea.

All agricultural grade grains have weevils. Weevils make good protein sources for the microbes in the soil. The worst problem with them is if you store a bag in the garage over the winter. In the spring you will have half a bag of grains and half a bag of ick. Still, I stir it all together and apply normally. But I would rather just apply it all in the fall and buy fresh stuff in the spring.

The kicker is my bride has a deal w/her doc. She will soak her feet in corn meal juice 3-4 times a week. and she does'nt want to see weevils in her corn soup

I wouldn't eat the horticultural grade stuff. Use food grade from the grocery store for that.
