I have a roll of red tips and one section has leaves that are dieing and it looks like it starts with spots on the leaves. Any one know the cause and cure?

Are those red tip photenias? The sick tree treatment was originally formulated to save these plants. Doing those things will improve their performance despite the fact they often have problems.

Spots on leaves are often caused by a fungus which can be treated with cornmeal.

It is a method using products and techniques to help shrubs and trees get and stay healthy. Here is the information you need.

If this doesn't give you everything then come back and ask some more. Someone will be glad to assist with terms or techniques.

My red tips have not responded to the sick tree treatment. Sometimes the soil or location is just that bad.

Good thing about organics. Even if you don't save the plants, doing the sick tree treatments makes the location better for future plants.

It's really too bad about those red tips. I think they are pretty and make an elegant screen.

I'm in the process of ripping out all of my red tips that have come down with this problem. 2 years of sick tree treatment and they're not responding at all.

While I have Chinese, not red tip, have you tried a generous spraying of Garrett juice AND seaweed together?

I myself have never had any issues w/ die-back, but whenever I get spots or browning leaf tips that combo has done the trick.

Good luck!

I am going to rip out all mine with the same problem. Two years of nursing is too long. I heard that I need to pick up EVERY SINGLE LEAF as well as replace all the mulch and soil since that is where the problem lies. That seems a bit extreme to me. Anyone else ever heard of this? (And, no, it wasn't a soil salesman that told me.)

Yep, I've been told the same by nursery people - at least about the leaves and mulch. I wouldn't bother replacing the soil. A good dose of cornmeal should zap the remaining bad fungi. Just my uninformed opinion. Howard merely mentions that the leaves need to be thrown into the compost pile in his new book. It's a good thing I think the things are hideous to begin with.
