I recently heard from one of our members that Shades of Green is pretty much quitting on carrying Caddos. Evidently there've been too many lost due to over-watering and they don't want the hassle of customers complaining about it (even though it's the customer's fault for not following instructions) so they are dropping the Caddos.

Anyone else notice issues like this? I know Caddo Maples are very pretty in the Fall and that they are good for this area, but it sounds like too many homeowners are drowning the poor things.

Personally, I prefer Shumard- not as pretty in Fall maybe, but faster growing and I like the branching structure better.

As you may recall from a previous post, I was intent on buying a Caddo Maple. See link: http://www.dirtdoctor.com/forum/viewtop ... highlight=

However, when I started pricing Caddos I heard a lot of negativity. I contacted eight small nurseries. Only Rohdes had the Caddo Maple. Shades of Green told me they had been carrying the balled and burlapped trees, and have stopped. The Caddos were not coming out of transplant shock. They thought it might be due to root loss, and if they found a supplier of Caddos in containers, they would carry them again. (She compared the Caddo to a Live Oak in that maybe the plant has "primary roots" and if the tree was dug up without enough root, it wouldn't make it.)

Redentas also no longer carries Caddos. This time I was told that they weren't doing well, and they were no longer carrying them at any of their nurseries. She said they seem to thrive only in East Texas.

The Ent brought up an interesting point. Are the Caddos inadvertantly being drowned? All the research I found on Caddo Maples said they like well-drained soil. Link: http://www.tbufc.org/feature/trees/caddomaple.html

If you live in black clay, well-drained is out of the question.

Someone else suggested that Caddos like it slightly acidic. Does anyone else have any ideas?

Okay, so it's becoming an issue then.

Sounds like another reason to like the Shatungs.
