I'm horrible with identifying plants. Even with the aid of the wonderful pictures in Howard's book, Plants for Texas, I'm still not sure about some of the things I've got around here - specifically 2 of my trees.

I've got what I initially thought was a some sort of maple. I was then told that it was really a sweet gum. In doing some research today on sweet gums I found out that it's supposed to have those nasty little prickly balls. Well, it doesn't..

The other tree I'm unsure of is what I've been told is some variety of ash. It's huge, perhaps 70', and to my untrained eye not in the best of health. It has a fair amount of dead and spindly limbs and it takes until about early June for leaves to start filling in. I've seen some improvement since I started improving the health of my soil and aerating.

Any help identifying either of these will be much appreciated.

It could still very well be a Sweet Gum. It might just be a male. Unless I am remembering wrong, only the females produce those 'fruit' in the form of sticky knobs.

As to the other one, I think we'd need pictures. It could be an ash- several don't do well around here, but Texas, White, and a number of others do very well.

Of course, if the soil was ruined from years of high nitrogen, high salt artificial junk then any tree would be suffering.

In my initial post I posted a link to images for both trees. I hope the one tree really is a sweet gum and not something like a silver maple. Either way, it's a beautiful tree that we're enjoying.

My guess is sweetgum (complete with chlorotic leaves) and an Arizona ash. The pictures you posted were great and the format was even better.

The ash tree is worrying me a bit. The crotch area is very deep and low to the ground as you can see in one of the photos. If it is in fact an Arizona ash then I'm worried about it eventually coming down on the house. I'll take in some samples to have it positively ID'd tomorrow. Thanks, Tony and the Ent.

Will applying some texas green sand help with the sweet gum's chlorosis? Or should I hold off until later?

The Sweetgum is better suited to the deep acidic soils of East Texas. When it hits our limestone covered with clay it starts to have problems. There are some beauties in and around Dallas but many are in trouble. I would do the entire sick tree treatment and go heavy on the green sand.
Next spring, get into the foliar feeding on a regular basis.
