I need to find out a way to get rid of Johnson Grass in a yard without using chemicals. Have tried pulling it out when it is young and when it is grown tall. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any ideas?

Johnsongrass is one of the most difficult weeds to get rid of that I have dealt with. It has rhizomes that grow very deeply (12-15 inches in my experience). The only way I have found is to dig it completely out, because any little piece of the rhizome left in the ground will sprout a new plant. I have heard that if you keep mowing it short it will die out, but I haven't found that to be the case. We have a field with lots of it. There is a native grass also growing in that field which seems to choke it out, but I haven't been able to ID it, and I wouldn't recommend it as a turf anyway. The locals call it "wire grass".
