Has anyone out there ever used the small, thorny burrs that fall from the sweet gum tree as a mulch, along with the fallen leaves from the tree? Do they break down very easily, or should they be not used at all? Any insight is appreciated.

I have recommended that people use them as mulch when they have cats using their flowerbeds as bathrooms. It also keeps squirrels from planting seeds and digging.
