Elephant Garlic from The Dirt Doctor’s Garden – Newsletter

Bulb, cloves, corms and rounds.

Elephant garlic just harvested; notice the golden corms on sides of bulbs.

I recommend growing all kinds of garlic. It’s easy to grow, tastes good and is quite good for you. Thanks to Garlic Mike, one of the regular callers to the old radio show, I have a strong crop of a special garlic. It is called elephant garlic because it gets so large and is actually a leek. It has large, decorative, round flowers in the early summer and these pretty flowers will often have small black seeds. Regular garlic has small bulblets in the flowers rather than hard seeds.

Elephant garlic can be purchased from seed companies such as Filaree Farms.
