HABIT: Small yellowish flowers in clusters. Dark purple berries. One of the first plants to flower and leaf out in the spring. Leaves are opposite and alternate, giving a very angular but interesting appearance. Forms thickets by self-layering. Looks similar to yaupon holly.

CULTURE: Grows well in any soil with little care.

USES: Natural shrub, wildlife food, screen.

PROBLEMS: Caterpillars. Not much color or excitement.

NOTES: Good to attract wildlife.
