| Declared Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, Guanajuato is an historic city, where each of the streets has its own special significance.
The name comes originally from the word “Quanashuato” which in the native Tarasco language means place where there is an abundance of frogs. A large part of its beautiful buildings were built by the old mining families that accumulated vast fortunes from extracting minerals. Today this activity has declined, so that there are various mines that can be visited and are offered as a part of the tourist route. |

Views of the city from the statue of El Pipila
El Pipila was built in honor of Juan Jose de los Reyes Martinez, nick-named “El Pípila”, who heroically burned down the door of the Spanish stronghold Alhondiga de Granaditas on September 28, 1810, during the first battle in the Mexican War of Independence. The panoramic vista of Guanajuato from this area is spectacular by day or by night. There is a restaurant near here in the Hotel Boutique Refugio Casa Colorado.
